How records in this file are sourced, dated and revised, and how people, bands and venues are named.
Edition of
Sources
A record names what it read. Programmes, published scores, instrument makers' guides, competition reports, recordings and accounts of public performance are the material behind each piece. Where a figure or a date depends on a document, the document is named in the record itself.
Dates
Every record carries the date it was checked, written dd/mm/yyyy. Two records on the same subject may carry different dates, because a source can change. Dates are shown in the record header and in the index, never in a form a reader has to decode.
Names
Bands, people, venues and institutions are named exactly as the source names them. Where a source gives a title and a spelling, that title and spelling are kept. A person is described in the third person, on the record of what can be verified.
Photographs
Photographs in this file show the band room, the parade ground and the tuning table: chanters, drones, reeds, drums, scores, a line of players waiting for the first note. Each plate carries a caption that names the scene.
Corrections
A correction is welcome. When a source changes, the record is rechecked, its text is amended and its date changes with it.
